One of the best ways to fight fraud is to talk about it. Talk to others before you send any funds or respond to a message you were not expecting. Share if you have been a victim in the past, and share the types of scams you hear about to inform those around you. Here are tips to share:
– Don’t call the phone number or click a website link in any unsolicited message. Call a trusted or verified number.
– If payment is demanded by wire or bank transfer, payment apps, gift cards, and cryptocurrency, it’s likely a scam.
– Scammers love to text so be aware of any unsolicited message.
– Use the free search tool on Investor.gov to check out any investment offer.
If you know someone who has been scammed, report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the FBI at ic3.gov.
