Fighting Fraud Friday! During tax season, scammers might impersonate IRS agents with an unexpected call, email, or text saying they are from the “Tax Mediation and Resolution Agency” or other fake agency. They will say you haven’t paid your taxes and try to connect you with a “tax resolution officer”. All of this is a scheme to steal your personal and financial information. Here’s how to avoid it:
* The IRS will always make its first contact by mail for any issue.
* Contact the IRS directly at IRS.gov for trustworthy information.
* Never give your personal or financial information to an unexpected caller.
* Be aware of scare tactics such as a sense of urgency or threats.
If you see this scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. You can also report IRS scammers to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at tigta.gov.
