Digital wallet fraud occurs when scammers trick users into providing card numbers and one-time passcodes (OTP). They will call you saying they’re from your bank or government agency asking for your card details. Once they have that along with the OTP, they enter it into their digital wallet to use repeatedly. Here’s how to avoid this scam:
– Verify calls. Call back to numbers on your card, statements, or website.
– Your bank will never ask you to share a security code or OTP.
– Never share bank account and credit card numbers.
– Use biometric security such as FaceID or TouchID when available.
– Enable real-time purchase alerts on your banking app.
If you know someone who has been scammed, report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the FBI at ic3.gov.
