The saying “Don’t Talk to Strangers” has hit the digital world. Scammers try to build your trust through conversation to gain information or to gain access to your phone through a QR code or clicking a link. Here’s how to avoid this type of scam:
* Don’t reply to text messages from unknown numbers.
* Never click links in unexpected messages.
* Never share personal or financial information in messages.
* Don’t hand over your phone to strangers.
* Don’t scan QR codes or download anything to your phone from someone you don’t know. If you have fallen victim to a smishing scam, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the FBI at ic3.gov.
