Health insurance scams increase during Open Enrollment for Medicare and the Marketplace (November 1 – January 15). Avoid scammers and dishonest businesses with this advice:
* Reach out directly:
– Medicare: use Medicare.gov or call 800-633-4227
– Other coverage: use HealthCare.gov or call 800-318-2596
* Ignore unexpected calls, texts, and emails.
* Type the name of the website directly into browser.
* Scroll past paid ads and be sure to look for .gov ending for websites.
* Compare costs, coverage, and plans at HealthCare.gov or your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).
Report Medicare impersonators and scams at 1-800-MEDICARE. Also report any insurance scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the FBI at ic3.gov.
